Introduction
Welcome to an audio description of our Thinktank sensory map.
It is designed to help you identify the sensory areas within the museum.
The entrance to Thinktank is located on Level 0.
Level 0
The entrance to Thinktank is located on Level 0.
You will enter Thinktank through two sets of doors and be greeted by the reception staff and ticket desk. To the right there is a fire exit, male, female, and accessible toilets, along with a baby changing facility. The ticket desk and toilet areas can be a busier and louder part of the museum.
Adjacent to these facilities is an indoor picnic area for visitors, which can also be a noisier and busier space.
Exploring the galleries on this level, you'll come across the Move It and the Power Up Galleries. There may be some noise around the Power Up gallery from the nearby ticket desk and exhibits.
In the centre of the floor, you'll find the lift and stairs. If you're sensitive to low light, it's worth noting that an area to the side of the stairs, has low lighting conditions. It can also be noisy, due to the nearby Power Up gallery and there are some smells from the exhibits too.
Moving further in, you'll discover the Signal Box Café. This area is typically a little more crowded and has stronger smells due to the food and drinks served. There is a gender-neutral toilet and two fire exits in this area.
At the front of both galleries, natural light streams-in through the large glass windows. While there is another fire exit by the windows, please be aware that there is no exit to the science garden from this floor.
Level 1
You can reach level 1 via the stairs or lift. These are in the centre of the floor and open out onto two gallery spaces. To the left is the Spitfire gallery and to the right is We Made it.
There is natural light on the majority of this level, due to the large windows. It is worth noting, that the galleries are partially open to the floor below.
In terms of visitor traffic, the busier parts of this floor are the entrances to the galleries and the We Made It gallery. If you are seeking quieter areas, then head to the far ends of both galleries as these tend to be less busy.
Behind the galleries you will find four classrooms. At either end of the classrooms there are male, female and accessible toilets. There is a gender-neutral toilet behind the Spitfire Gallery.
There are also two fire exits placed at each end of the classrooms and another fire exit in the middle.
You can move up to level 2 by using the central lift or stairs.
Level 2
Level 2 contains a wide range of galleries.
The quiet galleries on this level are the Spotlight and Our changing Planet.
The Things About Me gallery can be a busier and noisier space, due to the interactive exhibits with sound.
There is no natural light in these galleries.
The Wildlife gallery has some natural light as part of it has a large window.
If you are in need of a quieter area, you can visit the Quiet Room which is on this level. Access can be arranged through any staff member.
For convenience, male, female, and accessible toilets are available on this floor. There is also a designated first aid area.
Additionally on this level there is the museum Shop and the Think Code Play area, which is equipped with gaming machines. These areas may experience higher levels of noise and activity on the floor.
Near to the shop is the groups entrance and Studio classroom. You can exit Thinktank via the shop and can access the Science Garden from this exit too.
Level 3
Level 3 features the MiniBrum gallery. This interactive gallery for children can have higher noise levels and lots of activity. This area is equipped with amenities like a coffee corner, toilets, and a classroom den. This gallery can get very busy and noisy, and there may be smells from the Coffee Corner.
The central lift and staircase also link to the Planetarium and Futures gallery. Both of which have some noise due to the exhibits and shows.
Natural light is absent on this floor.
Access to the theatre and event suite is on this level. To access the science garden, visitors need to go to the exit on level 2.
Science Garden
The Science Garden is outside on level 0.
The Mechanise, Mobile, and Energise sections of the Science Garden, along with the Kids' Park, tend to be busier and noisier parts.
In contrast, the Garden Arena offers a quieter and less crowded atmosphere.
Thank you for joining us on this part of the sensory audio tour.
