CommunitiesWe are lucky to have an amazing team of volunteers supporting us at all nine of our sites. Our volunteers get involved with a whole range of projects and activities and we couldn't do what we do without them.
About the volunteer programme
Volunteering with us is a fantastic way to get involved, develop new skills, and make a meaningful contribution to our work. We offer a wide range of opportunities to suit different interests and availability.
If you enjoy engaging with the public, you might consider becoming a Visitor Support Volunteer at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, Thinktank or Museum Collection Centre, or you might like to share stories as a Heritage Interpreter at our historic properties. For those who prefer flexible roles, you can assist with events and activities. If you want to commit to regular, weekly volunteering, then you can support our Learning Teams by helping with school visits. If behind-the-scenes work is more your style, our Conservation and Collections Teams offer opportunities to help preserve and care for our collection. We even have remote volunteering options, such as transcribing oral histories from home.
No matter your skills or schedule, there’s a place for you in our volunteer community!

We are extremely grateful of the time our volunteers dedicate to supporting us, and we really want to make sure we are giving all of our team as good an experience as possible.
As a Birmingham Museums’ volunteer you have:
- An induction with us before you start to get you ready to volunteer
- Access to ongoing role specific training and support
- The opportunity to claim your travel expenses of up to £7.20 per day, in the hope that you won’t be left out of pocket as a result of giving us your time
- Access to our monthly newsletter news page which will keep you in the loop with all things relating to volunteering and Birmingham Museums
There are also plenty of opportunities to meet new people too, learn new things and really help your local museums.
